Sheehan's father, Arthur Edmond Sheehan, was an automotive engineer and businessman and her mother, Gladys Anna Larson, worked at a hospital. Her parents divorced in 1935 just a few years after she was born.
In 1942, her brother,
Arthur Sheehan , a famous triple-A league pitcher, was drafted into theUnited States Army . Working as a gunner on a flying fortress, he was promoted toStaff Sergeant and died after his plane was shot down over Germany. Only two out of nine people survived. He was later added to the San Francisco Hall of Fame.Her brother Ed is a
Jehovah's Witness and was a skilled soccer player in high school. He also played Professional Band and was in the Band Corps for WWII.Early career
In 1949 she won the local Miss Milkmaid pageant which launched her career. Sheehan had her first chance at fame when she won first place in the Miss San Francisco Pageant of 1950: her prize was a Gensler Lee diamond ring. She took honors for Miss San Francisco and flew to Santa Cruz, California to be on Jim Davis's KCBS Radio Show and take part in the Miss California Pageant.Sheehan dated and married George Duuglas Von-Ittu, a union official. They divorced after a year. Shortly after the divorce, she participated in the Miss California Pageant of 1951. Two years later, in 1953, her father died of diabetes.
Fame
Sheehan was "Playboy" magazine's Playmate of the Month for October 1958, tied-in with
Mara Corday . Hercenterfold was photographed bySam Wu . She made it into her first magazine, "Comedy", on July 1953. She later got into acting, performing in her first movie: "The Adventures of Hajji Baba ". She later posed for magazines such as "TV Fan" and "People Today". In 1955, she finally got to speak on camera, when she made it into her first dialogue role on "Son of Sinbad".She was in the movies "Kismet", "The French Line", "Daddy Long Legs", "Blondie", as well as "The
NBC Comedy Hour".Agnes Moorehead was her acting coach during this period.Sheehan also became one of the six
Goldwyn Girls in 1955."Gigi" was her last movie, made the same year she marriedDennis Crosby .Shortly after
Bing Crosby 's first wife,Dixie Lee , died ofovarian cancer , he started dating Sheehan. Their relationship became very serious. He would fly to San Francisco to do his radio show, then would stop by Sheehan's place to pick her up for their date. Eventually, Crosby proposed to Sheehan.On May 4, 1958, she married Crosby's son
Dennis inLas Vegas, Nevada . They had three children: Gregory Crosby; Dennis Crosby, Jr.; and Patrick Anthony Crosby. They divorced in 1964 and Sheehan never remarried.After divorcing Dennis Crosby, Sheehan dated a number of famous men,including Australian actor Rod Taylor and
Frank Sinatra .For a time, Sheehan dated
Elvis Presley ; once she flew with him to Memphis to see his mother. She had even gone to dinner withHoward Hughes . She had also modeled with actorMarlon Brando .The last famous man that she had been known to date was Spanish actorCantinflas .Later life
Sheehan's mother died in 1980 from
pneumonia .In her later years, Sheehan lived in
Van Nuys, California with her son Gregory, a Hollywood producer and screenwriter, and his wife Spice Williams, an actress and stuntwoman.She started taking hormone pills, which caused her to develop breast and
