He worked in a number of American motion-picture producer and directorMack Sennett 's comedies, and lost one of his eyes in a stunt that went wrong (while falling into a barrel of water, his eye was caught by a floating matchstick on top) and had to wear a glass eye, which gave him a somewhat cross-eyed appearance.
