John Joseph Jonas (born 1932) is a Canadian
metallurgist who specializes in metal shaping and forming.Born in
Montreal, Quebec , Jonas received aBachelor of Engineering in Metallurgical Engineering in 1954 fromMcGill University and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Sciences in 1960 fromUniversity of Cambridge . He was a Professor in the Department of Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering at McGill University. He currently holds the Francqui International Chair at theGhent University .In 2000, he was awarded the
Canada Council for the Arts ' Killam Prize.In 1993, he was made an Officer of the
Order of Canada for being "internationally renowned for having introduced a method of controlled rolling in the manufacture of steel sheeting".
