Agama (mythology)

Agama (mythology)

Agama, that is, which has come down (implicitly from the divine source) is a body of treatises and texts consisting of mythological, ritual and philosophical materials, not contained in the Vedic texts. According to the tradition, unlike the Vedas, Agams were accessible to women and non-Brahmins. The Agamas are regarded as the fifth Vedas. The term appears in the early texts of Shaivas; in Vaishnava texts, the term is called Samhitas, whereas, the tradition of the Shaktas call them Tantra, but not with the same meaning and connotation as the term tantra signifies in general.
