In the transcription of Afro-asiatic languages such as Arabic, unicode|ḍ represents an "emphatic" voiced dental stop (IPA: IPA|/dˤ/).

In the transcription of Indic languages, and in the orthography of the O'odham language, unicode|ḍ represents a voiced retroflex stop (IPA: IPA|/ɖ/). This was used in a former transcription of Javanese, but has been replaced by "dh."
