Cabo de Santo Agostinho is 40 km south of the city of
Recife ,Pernambuco ,Brazil . Although the official Portuguese discovery of Brazil was byPedro Cabral onApril 21 ,1500 , some historians believe thatVicente Yáñez Pinzón already had set anchor in a bay in Cabo de Santo Agostinho onJanuary 26 ,1500 . The municipality thus has a claim to being the birthplace of Brazil.Cabo de Santo Agostinho has both an industrial side that is centered around the Port of Suape and many beautiful tropical beaches and nature reserves. The best known beaches are Calhetas, Paraíso, and Gaibu. Especially pretty is Pedra do Xareu, where one can find the Recanto do Domingos at the far south end of the beach.
