Janet Jackson .ong information
Released on
September 28 ,1998 , it was the fifth single released from Jackson's sixth studio album "The Velvet Rope ". "You" contains a sample from War's 1972 "The Cisco Kid", written by Harold Brown, Thomas Sylvester Allen, Morris Dickerson, Howard Scott, Leroy Jordan,Lee Oskar , and Charles Miller. Although the single received a promo release in theUnited Kingdom , it was ineligible to chart there. TheJapan ese commercial release includes a B-side from "The Velvet Rope" called "Accept Me", a song about a woman begging acceptance from her lover, family, and the world. The song was also released on the "Every Time" single. Even though "You" was never officially released inSouth Africa , it was able to chart on import sales. The song's lyrics were alleged to have been written as a message to Jackson's brother
Michael Jackson with whom she had a conflict after they made a collaboration on the song "Scream". However, Jackson cleared up this rumor in anMTV interview stating that in the song she is actually singing to herself.Music video
The video for the song was shot at the SECC Arena in
Glasgow ,Scotland onJune 2 1998 in front of a select group of fans. Made to look like a live performance, it is spliced with actual concert footage of Jackson'sThe Velvet Rope Tour , filmed at the same location the next day. The video is featured on the limited bonus-DVD edition of 2001's "All for You" as well as the 2004 video compilation "".Track listings and formats
