Bhangarh is a place on the way from
Jaipur toAlwar city in Rajasthan state of India. Today Bhangarh is known for its ruins where nobody dares to go after dark, but is worth a visit; in fact the place is beautiful and tranquil. What remains though, is a shadow of a once beautiful kingdom. This town was established by
Madho Singh , younger brother of KingAkbar ’s GeneralRaja Man Singh , in1631 .Bhangarh Ruins
Legend has it that due to a curse, the whole town was vacated overnight. According to the story, if the town was ever rediscovered, the township would not be found, but only temples would show up.
Passing by Bhangarh,
temples dot thelandscape and even far up on the mountains onlyshrines can be seen. It is said that nobody returns from there who stays after dark. The Government of India states that an office of the
Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) should be at every historical structure in India. Curiously though, theArchaeological Survey of India (ASI) have an office about one kilometer away from the ruins of Bhangarh. Apparently this office is close to a temple because of this myth. (ASI) has put up a signboard at Bhangarh stating, "Staying after sunset is strictly prohibited in this area."Myth
People who visit this place out of tourist interest say that there is a strange feeling in the atmosphere of Bhangarh, which causes symptoms of anxiety and restlessness.
The myth is as follows: The charm of princess of Bhangarh Ratnawati was said to be matchless in all of Rajasthan. Being eighteen years old, the princess started getting matrimonial offers from other states. In the same region there lived a
tantrik , a magician well versed in the occult, named Singhia who was desperately in love with the princess knowing that he would never be allowed to even see her, let alone meet her.One day, he saw the princess' maid in the market buying scented oil for her. Seeing this, he had an idea by which he could meet the princess. He used his black magic and put a spell on the oil which would hypnotize the princess by her merely touching the oil, whereupon she would become his sexual slave. The princess foiled this plan though. She had seen the tantrik enchanting the oil, and she therefore threw it away, whereupon the flagon rolled over a stone. As soon as the oil touched the stone, it started rolling towards the wicked tantrik and crushed him. While dying, Singhia cursed the palace with the death of all who dwelt in it, without any rebirth in their destinies. The very next year there was a battle between Bhangarh-Ajabgarh and no one survived in the battle nor in the palace, not even the princess Ratnawati. There was a dual curse as well- after the legendary battle between the two kingdoms, the prime minister of the kingdom cursed Bhangarh that no one would settle there in the future and whoever dared to do so would die as well. It is said by the local villagers that whenever a house has been built there, the roof has collapsed. In present day Bhangarh, all the houses are without a roof. Legend has it that even the village closest to the town, has roofs built of straw and not bricks.References
