The East London Line closed on 22 December 2007, and will not reopen until June 2010 when it will become part of the new
London Overground system. While the station is closed rail replacement route ELW runs to Whitechapel via Shadwell. Buses cannot cross the river because of loading gauge constraints in the Rotherhithe Tunnel.
The quickest way to travel to
Rotherhithe is by road. Passengers must either takeLondon Buses route 100 toElephant & Castle , and then takeLondon Buses route C10 , butTransport for London 's Journey Planner estimates this journey to take 64 minutes [http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk]The proposed extension of the East London Line raised concerns that the station would have to be closed due to its platforms being too short to accommodate the new, longer, trains planned for the line. However, on
16 August 2004 then-Mayor of London Ken Livingstone announced that the station would remain open. [http://www.tfl.gov.uk/rail/initiatives/ell-stations.shtml]Gallery
