Jun-ichi Nishizawa(西澤潤一, born September 12,1926 in Sendai, Japan) is a Japanese engineer known for his invention of optical communication systems (including optical fiber,laser diode etc.), PIN diode and SIT/SITh (Static Induction Transistor/Thyristor). He is currently the president of Tokyo Metropolitan University.

Biography

He earned a B.S. in 1948, and a Doctor of Engineering degree in 1960, from Tohoku University. In 1953, he joined Research Institute of Electrical Communication, at Tohoku University, where he was eventually named Professor and was appointed Director of Research Institute of Electrical Communication.

Awards and honors

Nishizawa is a Life Fellow of the IEEE. He is a Fellow of several other institutions, including the Physical Society, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Polish Academy of Sciences. He received the IEEE Edison Medal in 2000. IEEE has founded Jun-ichi Nishizawa Medal in 2002.
