Williams College in 1983. After graduating from college and prior to law school, Sutton taught high school history and was the varsity soccer coach at TheColumbus Academy , a private school in Gahanna, Ohio.He received his law degree from
The Ohio State University 'sMoritz College of Law in 1990. He then clerked for JudgeThomas Meskill of theUnited States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1990-1991 and then on theUnited States Supreme Court for JusticesAntonin Scalia andLewis Powell from 1991-1992.Sutton was in private practice in Columbus from 1992 to 1995 and 1998 to 2003. Sutton was first nominated by President
George W. Bush onMay 9 ,2001 to a seat on the Sixth Circuit vacated byDavid A. Nelson . That nomination, made during the107th Congress , never received a floor vote in theU.S. Senate . Sutton was not confirmed until almost two years later, onApril 29 ,2003 , when theU.S. Senate of the108th Congress voted [http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=108&session=1&vote=00135 52-41] in favor of his confirmation to the Sixth Circuit. He received his commission onMay 5 ,2003 . Sutton was the third judge nominated to the Sixth Circuit by Bush and confirmed by the Senate.See also
