Fernald Closure Project

Fernald Closure Project

The Fernald Closure Project is a program run by the United States Department of Energy to clean up the former uranium processing site Fernald Feed Materials Production Center near Fernald, Ohio. From 1951 to 1989, the plant produced 170,000 metric tons uranium (MTU) metal products and 35,000 MTU of intermediate compounds, such as uranium trioxide and uranium tetrafluoride.

In 1990, Congress approved closure of the site approved environmental cleanup of the facility. Fluor Fernald, part of the Fluor Corporation, was awarded the contract in 1992 for cleanup of the site. Fluor Fernald completed the cleanup in October 2006, 12 years ahead of schedule and 7.8 billion dollars below the original cost estimate.cite web|url=http://www.pmi-swohio-chapter.org/swohnl/0703nl.pdf|title="Congratulations Fluor Fernald"|accessdate=2008-03-29|author=PMI Southwest Ohio Chapter] cite web|url=http://www.haverford.edu/publications/winter99/damage.htm|title="Damage Control"|accessdate=2008-03-29|author=Nancy Cambria]
