Fourteenth Court of Appeals of Texas

Fourteenth Court of Appeals of Texas

The Fourteenth Court of Appeals of Texas, one of the Texas Courts of Appeals that sits in Houston, was created in 1967 by an amendment to the Texas Constitution which created 14 court of appeals districts.

The court is composed of a Chief Justice and eight associate justices who hear appeals from the counties of Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Waller, and Washington. It shares concurrent jurisdiction with the First Court of Appeals of Texas over the same geographic region; cases filed in any of the counties are randomly assigned between the 1st and 14th Courts but may be moved to equalize the dockets of both Courts.

As an intermediate court for the State of Texas, it hears appeals from both civil and criminal cases. Its rulings on civil cases may be appealed to the Supreme Court of Texas; criminal appeals may be heard by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The Courts of Appeals in Texas do not review criminal cases involving the death penalty; those appeals are heard directly by the Court of Criminal Appeals.
