Crown Council of Ethiopia

Crown Council of Ethiopia

The Crown Council of Ethiopia was the constitutional body which advised the reigning emperors of Ethiopia (Nəgusä Nägäst) and acted on behalf of the Crown. The council’s members were appointed by the emperor.

The Communist Derg deposed the current emperor, Haile Selassie, 12 September 1974, then the following year announced that the monarchy had been abolished. However, in 1993 a Crown Council of Ethiopia, which included several descendants of Haile Selassie, claimed that the title of Emperor of Ethiopia still in existence, and the Crown Council is the legal head of Ethiopia.

The current Ethiopian constitution confirmed the abolition of the emperorship, but Ethiopian royalists continue to operate the Crown Council. On 16 March 16 2005, Prince Ermias Sahle Selassie was reconfirmed by Crown Prince Zera Yacob Amha Selassie as President of the Crown Council of Ethiopia. Zera Yacob Amha Selassie is considered Crown Prince of Ethiopia.[1]
