HMS "Largs" was a
World War II era warship.It was built by
France and named MV "Charles Plumier" in1938 . Following the French collapse it was transferred in1941 to theRoyal Navy and renamed HMS "Largs". She took part in many operations includingOperation Torch , the invasion ofNorth Africa , andOperation Overlord , the invasion ofNormandy .In
1945 it was transferred to thePacific War and used in actions inThailand and Malaya. After the end of the war it was handed aback to France, and served for nineteen years. It was sold off to a private company from Greece in1964 as a cruise ship, and given the name MV "Pleias". It was scrapped in1968 .The ship's surgeon during Normandy was Lt DA Maciver who was just 21 years old having graduated as a doctor before his 21st birthday. He later transferred to the RCN becoming Chief Surgeon at the National Defence Medical Centre in Ottawa at a rank equivalent to an RN Commodore.
Surg.Lieut D A Maciver was 23 years old in June 1944.He qualified as a doctor in 1942 and joined the RNVR early in 1943.He was Mentioned in Dispatches for servives during the Normandy Landings.
