Aviation Mall opened in 1975 with
JCPenney and Denby's (a regional chain) as anchors. The mall was relatively small when it first opened, but was later expanded with Sears and thenCaldor . In 1994, JCPenney built a new store next to its old store, with mall management converting the old space to more small store space.TJ Maxx was added the same year replacing space previously occupied by Magrams. In 1998, Caldor closed in a wave of underpreforming stores(in 1999, a year later, the whole chain would be closed), and became aBon Ton store. The food court was also remodeled at this time. Target built on in 2004, andDick's Sporting Goods moved into the remaining vacant portion of the original JCPenney slot in 2005.The Pyramid Companies unveiled a plan in 1998 to triple the mall's size with an convert|850000|sqft|m2|sing=on addition on adjoining property purchased for this purpose. Plans called for 14 movie theater screens, a new department store, and severalbig box tenants. [Moore, Deborah.
