Jedediah Island Marine Provincial Park

Jedediah Island Marine Provincial Park

Jedediah Island Marine Provincial Park is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. It is a small, 243 ha island which is quite beautiful. Anyone is free to camp on Jedediah island; but usually the only way to get there is to paddle from Lasqueti Island.

The Palmers

The Palmers bought the Island in 1950 as a vacation getaway in the summer. Then in 1972 they moved to the island and became fulltime residents. They lived there for twenty years. Mary Palmer didn't want the island to be developed after she was gone, so they fought long and hard to try to preserve it. In 1994 the Dan Culver Foundation started a province wide fund raising camaign. People all over donated and gave support. Then with a large donation from the Provincial Government, Jedediah Island was turned into a provincial park and can be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.

The Foot

In the summer of 2007, a family visiting Jedediah Island found the remains of a human foot on the beach they were at. They were visiting the island on vacation and decided to anchor in Sunset Cove, a protected cove on the north-west side of the island. They spent the day on the beach, when the 11 year old girl of the family asked about a shoe that had been sitting not too far from where she had been swimming earlier. The shoe appeared to have a sock full of rocks in it. Finally they decided to check it out. Within the tennis shoe, they found the remains of a human right foot. The Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were called out to the island. They believe the foot separated from the body naturally by decomposition.
