The park was named in honour of Eric W. Hamber, lieutenant-governor of British Columbia from 1936 to 1941.
World Heritage Site
This park was declared a
UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, together with the other national andprovincial park s that form theCanadian Rocky Mountain Parks , for the mountain landscapes containing mountain peaks,glacier s, lakes, waterfalls,canyon s and limestone caves as well asfossil s found here.Conservation
Vegetation around Fortress Lake is replete with spruce and balsam, consisting of a heavy understory of false azalea and rhododendron.
Recreation
Backcountry camping and hiking. Fishing for
brook trout in Fortress Lake. Crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. There are climbing opportunities as well.Location
As a remote wilderness area, the only access is via hike-in or ski-in. Park at the Sunwapta Falls parking lot in
Jasper National Park . It is a 22 kilometre hike over trails to Fortress Lake. The closest communities to the park areValemount, British Columbia andJasper, Alberta .ize
The park is 240 km² in size.
