Hayles was first noticed as a Stevenage player in their
FA Cup run before earning a move to Bristol Rovers in 1997. After just one season with the Pirates, Hayles moved to Fulham in 1998 and helped the club through two promotions to get to theFA Premier League .In 2004, he was released on a free transfer to Sheffield United, but was only there a couple of months before he moved to Millwall for a nominal fee.Plymouth Argyle

Ian Holloway for a fee of £100,000 prior to the 2006/2007 season, where he quickly established himself as a supporters' favourite after a hugely impressive start. He made his Plymouth Argyle debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he also scored his first goal for Plymouth Argyle. He was lucky to have the goal put down as his name as it appeared to be headed over the line by fellow team mateNick Chadwick .
