"Empty World" is a novel written by Samuel Youd (under the pen name “John Christopher”), published in 1977.

Young Neil Miller is orphaned following a car accident and goes to live with his grandparents in Winchelsea, England. Shortly afterwards, they hear radio reports of a new plague that started in Calcutta, India, which is killing off everyone in its path except for a small percentage of children. Those who are infected appear to age quickly, dying after a few days. Soon the disease reaches England, and everyone Neil knows dies.

He takes a neighbour's car and, driving as best he can, heads for London to look for other survivors.

Along the way Neil gets into trouble with another survivor, Clive, who has become unbalanced after being alone for such a long time. He steals from Neil and destroys the car. Neil goes on to find two female survivors who have been protecting each other. He immediately falls in love with one of them, but has quite the opposite relationship with the other girl, who tries to kill him.

He finally has to survive not only the new empty world, but the psychological effect on the few survivors.

The German station ZDF produced a TV adaptation of the book in 1987.
