A.J. Antoon (
December 7 ,1944 -January 22 ,1992 ), was an Americantheatre director .Born in
Lawrence, Massachusetts , Antoon was a graduate ofBoston College and attended theYale School of Drama .In 1972, the Broadway
novice , a protegé of producerJoseph Papp , became the first director to be nominated in the same year for twoTony Award s as Best Director of a Play, for "Much Ado About Nothing ", later adapted fortelevision the following year, and "That Championship Season ". The latter won him not only the Tony but theDrama Desk Award as well. He also received a Tony for his direction of theKander and Ebb musical "The Rink" in 1984.Antoon, who was gay, died from complications due to
AIDS at theNew York University Medical Center inManhattan .tage productions
