About the district

The Concorde District was founded in 1993 as part the realignment of the Northern Region. The charter members of the district, which began play in the 1994-1995 school year, were Centreville, Chantilly, Herndon, Jefferson, Oakton, South Lakes, and W.T. Woodson, all of Fairfax County. All seven schools were among the largest schools in the Northern Region at the time, playing Division 6 football.

Member changes

In 1997, Potomac Falls High School of Loudoun County opened and joined the Concorde District due to its proximity to its member schools, but was not competitive because its size which was well below the AA/AAA cutoff, and also because it was a new school. Potomac Falls moved to the AA Northwestern District in 1999, and Woodson High School moved to the Liberty District, reuniting it with crosstown rival Fairfax which dropped the Concorde to six schools.

In 2000, Westfield opened and joined the Concorde, making it the second newly established school to join the district. South Lakes left the Concorde in 2003 to the Liberty due to declining enrollment, and Jefferson was allowed to play in the National District for football while remaining in the Concorde for other sports.

In 2005, Jefferson moved to the Liberty, while Fairfax moved to the Concorde, and Robinson was moved from the Patriot to the Concorde district. In 2009, Fairfax returned to the Liberty.

Enrollment

Herndon is currently the smallest school in the Concorde District with about 2,200 students, and Westfield is the largest at around 3,200. Robinson enrolls well over 4,000 students in grades 7-12, with about 2,800 in grades 9-12.

Strengths

Athletics

The Concorde District is best known for football, in which a Concorde District team has made the AAA Division 6 championship game from 2000–2007, including Robinson's 2001 championship season and 2004 runner up campaigns during their time in the Patriot District. In addition, the district has brought four AAA Division 6 championships in that span with Centreville (2000), Westfield (2003, 2007), and Oakton (2005). Oakton, Robinson, and Chantilly were in the top 10 in the standings for the AAA Wachovia Cup for Athletics, based on their performance in all sports in the 2005-2006 year.

Academics

Academically, the Concorde District schools are among the strongest in the nation, offering advanced placement and IB classes. All of the Concorde schools average over 1100 on the SAT and a large number of their students go to prestigious colleges and universities. Chantilly won the AAA Wachovia Cup for Academics, and Westfield was the runner up based on academic activities in the 2005-2006 year. In 2007, all schools in the Concorde District made the top 200 on the Newsweek Top Public High Schools list, with Oakton at 99, Centreville at 107, Chantilly at 125, Fairfax at 149, Robinson at 150, Herndon at 153, and Westfield at 170. The ranking is determined based on a ratio of students taking AP or IB classes to the number of graduating seniors.
