1997 Women's Field Hockey World Cup Qualifier

1997 Women's Field Hockey World Cup Qualifier

The ninth Women's Hockey World Cup Qualifier for the World Cup in Utrecht, The Netherlands was held in the "Magamba Stadium" in Harare, Zimbabwe, from Friday August 1 to Tuesday August 12, 1997. Twelve nations took part, and they were divided into two groups of six in the preliminary round. The top six teams will join the other six that have already qualified: Argentina, Olympic champions Australia, Germany, South Korea, the United States and hosts The Netherlands.

Two Chinese women's hockey team players, Shu Zhen Yu and Hong Bing Yang, and their team manager Li Xiao Sheng, were banned on Saturday August 9 for the rest of the tournament after they were found guilty of physically abusing two umpires after their match against Scotland the day before. After Scotland won the Pool B match 1-0, a fracas ensued when the Chinese, infuriated that a goal that they had scored in the second half was disallowed by Naomi Kato, confronted the match umpire. According to an official report Kato and her fellow umpire Jean Buchanan were "physically abused and attacked by some players of the China team at the completion of their match against Scotland".
