Grizzly Peak (Berkeley Hills)
- Grizzly Peak (Berkeley Hills)
Grizzly Peak is a summit in the Berkeley Hills above Berkeley, California. Its elevation is 1,754 feet (535 m) above mean sea level. The peak is located on the border between Alameda and Contra Costa counties, within the boundaries of Tilden Regional Park.
The peak was named for the California grizzly bear which inhabited the area until the last one was killed in the 1860s.
Grizzly Peak became more accessible in 1932 when a new road was constructed along the ridgeline of the Berkeley Hills, Grizzly Peak Boulevard. The name was extended to the previously-constructed ridgeline stretch of Euclid Avenue to the north shortly thereafter. This portion was and remains a residential area of Berkeley while the original stretch is largely undeveloped. It connects with Skyline Boulevard in Oakland at the intersection of Claremont Avenue and Fish Ranch Road. This intersection was historically an important summit or pass over the Berkeley Hills before a tunnel which preceded today's Caldecott Tunnel was constructed through the Berkeley Hills. An inn and stage stop was located here.
