Elaine Gottschall (18 August 19215 September 2005) BA, M.Sc. was the author of "Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet". She wrote a book to help those with intestinal bowel disorders try a new approach to treating their problems, called the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) . There are many testimonials of people who were about to have their colon removed, but through diet managed to treat their symptoms to the point that they were able to function normally. In her later years she became interested in the application of the specific carbohydrate diet for children with developmental disorders such as autism and generously gave large amounts of her time to helping parents on message boards and in real life.

Her work builds on the work done by Dr. Sydney Haas, with whom she consulted when looking for a solution to her young daughter's ulcerative colitis, implementing his advice with success and narrowly avoiding the need for a heartbreaking colon removal operation
