S. Mark Young

S. Mark Young holds the George Bozanic and Holman G. Hurt Chair in Sports and Entertainment Business at the University of Southern California. He is also a Professor of Accounting and Management within the Marshall School of Business, and a Professor of Communication (USC Annenberg School for Communication). Young teaches and does research in the area of entertainment management with a speciality in the psychology of celebrity and popular culture.

Together with Mike Richardson (Dark Horse Entertainment's President) and Steve Duin (columnist for The Oregonian newspaper), Young wrote "Blast Off! Rockets, Robots, Ray Guns and Rarities from the Golden Age of Space Toys (Dark Horse Books, 2001)". Young's most recent book, "Entertainment Management - Understanding the Business of Motion Pictures, Television, Music and Games", will be a primer on how the entertainment industry operates and will be published by Prentice Hall.

Recently, he and "Loveline" 's Dr. Drew Pinsky published a study entitled "Narcissism and Celebrity" in the "Journal of Research in Personality" (October, 2006). While most information about celebrities is anecdotal, this paper is the first to directly gather actual data from celebrities. The paper gained world-wide attention, appearing in over 150 major news and entertainment websites and newspapers worldwide. Young was interviewed on Howard Stern's and Mitch Albom's radio shows as well as National Public Radio and the KTLA Morning News in Los Angeles. The study will also be included as part of the New York Times Magazine's special issue, The Year in Ideas for 2006. Young can be seen in interviews for the movies, "Unwound", a film about the history of toy robots and "Heckler," a documentary discussing how heckling and thoughtless criticism has escalated to new levels in today's society. This film was produced by Michael Addis and Jamie Kennedy and premiered at the Tribecca Film Festival in April, 2007.

Young was born in Sydney, Australia, is a graduate of Oberlin College and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
