Most prominent among the Kalals are the Ahluwalias which form a substantial proportion of this ethnic group. The word has originated from the fact that earlier the community used to distil liquor in the country side. The community got social standing only after Nawab Kapur Singh decided to accord misl(warrior) status on the community. Presently the community is one of the most prosperous and influential communities of Punjab.
