Volosovo ( _ru. Во́лосово) is a town in
Leningrad Oblast ,Russia . It lies on the railway between St. Petersburg, Russia andTallinn ,Estonia , 85 km southwest from St. Petersburg. Population: 11,660 (2002 Census); 10,250 (1989 Census).Volosovo was founded in 1870. During the Soviet period it was a powerful industrial town. In 1999, Volosovo was granted town status. It is the administrative centre of
Volosovsky District ofLeningrad Oblast . It is said that the name of the town comes from the ancient Slavic godVeles or Volos because of sacrificial places in his name that existed there. There are also somekurgan s inVolosovsky District .Southwest of Volosovo was the Sumsk air base facility, which saw some use during the
