PNP agar

PNP agar

PNP Agar is an agar medium used in microbiology to identify "Staphylococcus" species that have phosphatase activity. The medium changes color when p-nitrophenylphosphate disodium (PNP) is dephosphorylated. [cite journal |last=Janda |first=W.M. |authorlink= |coauthors=K. Ristow and D. Novak |year=1994 |month=September |title=Evaluation of RapiDEC Staph for Identification of "Staphylococcus aureus", "Staphylococcus epidermidis", and "Staphylococcus saprophyticus" |journal=Journal of Clinical Microbiology |volume=32 |issue=9 |pages=2056-2059 |pmid=7814525 |url= |accessdate= |quote= ]

PNP agar is composed of Mueller-Hinton agar buffered to to pH 5.6 to 5.8, with the addition of 0.495 mg/mL PNP. [cite journal |last=Geary |first=C. |coauthors=M.
