- Pacific Coast Theater of the American Civil War
The Pacific Coast Theater of the American Civil War was the military operations in the
United States bordering or close to thePacific Ocean , including the states ofCalifornia ,Oregon , andNevada and the territories of Washington, Utah, and Idaho. [TheBear River Massacre was formally in Washington Territory, which was partitioned into the Idaho Territory subsequent to the battle.] The heaviest fighting was usually between Union troop detachments from California and Confederate sympathizing Indians though, Union and Confederate forces did meet in the theater. Neither side had huge armies in the area, most of it was between small army departments. The campaign classification established by the
United States National Park Service [U.S.National Park Service , [http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/abpp/battles/bycampgn.htm#Pacific "Civil War Battle Studies by Campaign"] ] contains only one campaign and one battle in this theater. Other operations west of theMississippi River are included in the Trans-Mississippi Theater.See also
