American Civil War (1861–1865) was acivil war between theUnited States of America (the "Union") and the Southernslave state s of the newly-formedConfederate States of America underJefferson Davis . The Union included all of the free states and the five slaveholding border states and was led byAbraham Lincoln and the Republican Party.
