Mr. Shaw was responsible for tracking
Saddam Hussein 's weapons programs before and after the 2003 liberation of Iraq. He stated in [http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20041028-122637-6257r.htm October 2004] , [http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2005/3/2/230625.shtml March 2005] , and again in [http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/2/18/233023.shtml?s=lh February 2006] that it was theRussia ns who helped Saddam Hussein to "clean up" hisweapons of mass destruction stockpiles "to prevent theUnited States from discovering them."Kenneth R. Timmerman , [http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/2/18/233023.shtml?s=lh "Ex-Official: Russia Moved Saddam's WMD,"] "NewsMax ",February 19 ,2006 . ]In particular, on
February 18 ,2006 , Shaw told a conference atThe Intelligence Summit inAlexandria, Virginia , that "The short answer to the question of where theWMD Saddam bought from the Russians went was that they went" toSyria and theBeqaa Valley inLebanon ,Kenneth R. Timmerman [http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2006/2/18/233023.shtml?s=lh reported]February 19 ,2006 , in "NewsMax ". "They were moved by RussianSpetsnaz (special forces) units out of uniform, that were specifically sent to Iraq to move the weaponry and eradicate any evidence of its existence," Shaw said. After accusing Russian
GRU of helping Saddam to remove his WMD, Shaw was asked to resign for "exceeding his authority" in disclosing the information, a charge he called "specious." [http://www.washingtontimes.com/functions/print.php?StoryID=20041229-113041-1647r] , [http://www.ft.com/cms/s/a4bc50c6-2870-11d9-9308-00000e2511c8.html] .Shaw stated that he went public with his comments regarding Russia moving Iraq's WMD when he did to help
George W. Bush who he felt was being "crucified" by the revelations that over 350 tons of explosives had gone missing in Iraq as a result of the U.S. invasion [http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20041229-113041-1647r.htm] . He said "If I had not had the openly hostile environment in [Pentagon public affairs] , I would have moved the story differently. Getting the truth out instantly was more important than process."Corruption allegations
Shaw also claimed to have discovered corruption at the Department of Defence involving Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Larry DiRita, who called Shaw's charges "absurd and without any foundation" and noted that Shaw "has been directed on several occasions to produce evidence of his wide-ranging and fantastic charges and provide it to the DoD inspector general. To my knowledge, he has not done so." [http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20041229-113041-1647r.htm]
On the other hand, Journalist Christian Miller from the
Los Angeles Times claimed (based on unidentified sources) that Shaw was the subject of anFBI investigation because he conducted unauthorized investigations of Iraq reconstruction efforts and used the results of these unauthorized probes to direct multimillion dollar government contracts to his friends and associates [ [http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0707-03.htm Pentagon Deputy's Probes in Iraq Weren't Authorized, Officials Say] byT.
