Sanford Stakes

Sanford Stakes

The Sanford Stakes is an American Grade II Thoroughbred horse race raced annually at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Run over a distance of six furlong, the sprint race is open to two-year-old horses. Held for almost a hundred years, the only two years in which it did not take place was 1961 and 2005. It now offers a purse of $150,000.

The Sanford will be in its 94th running in 2008. It was in the seventh running of the 1919 Sanford that the great Man o' War lost his only race to a horse called Upset.

The Sanford is named for the Stephen Sanford and his son John, one of Saratoga's original horse racing families. Their horses first appeared in the Saratoga races in 1880. Stephen Sanford named all his best horses after members of the Mohawk nation.

Maria's Mon won the Sanford in 1995, Forty Niner in 1987, Affirmed in 1977, Secretariat in 1972, Tom Fool in 1951, Devil Diver in 1941, Upset in 1919, the filly Regret in 1914, and Spendthrift in 1878.

Only four horses have ever won all three Saratoga Racecourse events for two-year-olds. Regret (1914), Campfire (1916), Dehere (1993), and City Zip (2000) each swept the Hopeful Stakes, the Saratoga Special Stakes, and the Sanford Stakes.
