Walter Trampler (
August 25 ,1915 ,Munich –September 27 ,1997 ,Port Joli, Nova Scotia ) was a virtuoso performer and teacher of theviola andviola d'amore . He began to study music at the age of 6, learning from his father, aviolinist . In his youth, he touredEurope performing as the violist of the Strub String Quartet. Later, he served as the principal violist in theBerlin Radio Orchestra . He came to theUnited States in 1939, served in the United States Army duringWorld War II , and then returned to a life of music teaching, performing, and recording. He was a founding member ofThe Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center .He was known for his love of music spanning several centuries, from
Baroque to 20th century works, even inspiringLuciano Berio to write a piece for him. He made numerous recordings.
