footnotes =The José Ballivián Province is a province of the
Beni Department in northernBolivia ; it is named forJosé Ballivián , a general and formerpresident of Bolivia who lived from 1805 until 1852. The province has a north-south extent. To the west the province is bounded by theBeni River (with theLa Paz Department on the west (left) bank), to the east it borders on theYacuma Province of theBeni Department .The capital of the José Ballivián is Reyes (
Reyes, Bolivia ). Other towns in the province are San Borja,Rurrenabaque and Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa, Beni, Bolivia ).The province is sparsely populated. According to Instituto Nacional de Estadística de Bolivia [http://www.ine.gov.bo] the population in 2001 was 68000, of this 38000 in urban area and 30000 in rural area.
Using
Rurrenabaque as the starting point the pampas east of Reyes (Reyes, Bolivia ) with its rich wildlife is a popular destination.Rurrenabaque is also the point of access to the 'jungle ', la 'selva', that is therain forest west and south ofRurrenabaque , with theMadidi National Park known for its greatbiodiversity .But the name of the José Ballivián Province is probably only known by very few of the tourists visiting the area, and very likely the same apply to the knowledge of that crossing the
Beni River means going from theBeni Department to theLa Paz Department of Bolivia.References
