May 5 ,1805 –October 6 ,1852 ) was aBolivia n general during thePeruvian-Bolivian War and the 9th president of Bolivia fromSeptember 27 ,1841 toDecember 23 ,1847 .Born in
La Paz , Ballivián's early military career is unknown before his defeat of Peruvian GeneralAgustin Gamarra at theBattle of Ingavi onNovember 20 ,1841 and halting Peru's invasion of Bolivia. A national hero following the battle, Ballivián was overwhelmingly elected the 9th President of Bolivia later that year. Unable to gain the support of the military, Ballivián was unable to restore a stable government in Bolivia and was eventually deposed in a coup onDecember 23 ,1847 . Fleeing toPeru in January 1848, Ballivián lived in exile until his death inRio de Janeiro ,Brazil on October 16, 1852.References
