dragonfly of the familyAeshnidae , native fromAlaska through theNorthwest Territories to Newfoundland, south toNew Hampshire andMichigan in the easternUnited States , and to the mountains ofNew Mexico ,Arizona , andCalifornia in the west. It's named after the distinctive broken stripes on the sides of thethorax of many male specimens. It lives in many habitats from northern and mountain peatlands tocattail marshes and temporary pools. It is the characteristic species ofgrassland ponds.References
