December 6 - General SheikhMohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan , Crown Prince ofAbu Dhabi , announces that studies will begin on connecting all of the emirates in theUnited Arab Emirates by rail for both passenger andintermodal freight transport . The 700 km (435mile ) proposed route would connectAbu Dhabi ,Dubai , Sharjah,Ras Al Khaimah andFujairah withRuwais andGhowaifat . Officials hope to create a public-private partnership in order to build and operate the proposed railway.
