Aberdeen Street

Aberdeen Street

Aberdeen Street is a border street dividing Sheung Wan and Choong Wan (present-day Central) on Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong. It spans from Queen's Road Central to Caine Road in the Mid-levels. In the early days after 1841, while Choong Wan was planned to be business centre of Victoria City and an area of Westener population, Chinese population was removed from Choong Wan to area around Tai Ping Shan Street in Sheung Wan and Sheung Wan became the area of Chinese population.

The street hosted various historical building and events. The Victoria College, renamed from Central College after relocating to the section between Staunton Street and Hollywood Road of the street in 1889, was the most expensive and largest buildings in Hong Kong. In 1894 it again renamed to Queen's College. It became a ruin after the World War II and was demolished in 1950 to make space for police staff's quarter.

South of Hollywood Road was Alice Memorial Hospital and College of Medicine where Sun Yat-sen has graduated with distinction in 1892. After the college was merged into the University of Hong Kong, the hospital was also moved to Bonham Road and renamed to Nethersole Hospital.

The street is named after George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th Earl of Aberdeen.

After reclamation of island north, the division was extended by Wing Kut Street.
