As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 120,501 and the density of 2,620 persons per km². The total area is 46.01 km².

The city was founded on March 1, 1951.

History

The 2001 Japan Airlines mid-air incident occurred near Yaizu. On January 31, 2001, a Boeing 747-400 and a Douglas DC-10 owned by Japan Airlines narrowly avoided colliding with one another.

On November 1, 2008, Ōigawa, Shida District will merge into Yaizu; this will leave Shida District with one municipality. A following merge on January 1, 2009 will lead to the dissolution of Shida District.http://www.kokudo.or.jp/new/cities/sub/chubu/22.htm]
