The epicenter of the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923 was deep beneath
Izu Ōshima Island in Sagami Bay. It devastatedTokyo , the port city ofYokohama , surrounding prefectures of Chiba,Kanagawa , and Shizuoka, and caused widespread damage throughout the Kantō region.
