Willowbend, Houston, Texas

Willowbend is a neighborhood in Houston, Texas.

Willowbend is outside of the 610 Loop and inside Beltway 8. The neighborhood is south of Willow Meadows and southeast of Meyerland. The more affluent area of the neighborhood is located north of Willowbend. Many of the homes were constructed in the late 1950s/early 1960s and offer good examples of ranch style houses. In some cases, older homes in this area have been demolished to construct "McMansions" that do not fit with the general feel of the neighborhood.

History

The neighborhood is also historic in that it was the site of attacks committed by Houston's "original" mass murderer, who gunned down two schoolgirls and an elderly woman and injured two others in April 1973. One of the victims was walking home from Red Elementary School when she was shot. Larry Delon Casey remains in prison for the attacks, which occurred on Green Willow, Willowilde, Kinglet and near the intersection of Cliffwood and Stillbroke streets. Willow Park, a park operated by the City of Houston, is located at 10400 Cliffwood, adjacent to Red Elementary School [http://www.houstontx.gov/parks/images/NeighborhoodList4.gif] . The park features a playground, picnic facilities, a softball/soccer field, tennis courts and a small parking lot.
