- National Land & Property Gazetteer
-
The National Land & Property Gazetteer or NLPG is a database of land and property in England and Wales. It is part of the United Kingdom's e-government programme, which aims to increase the range of official transactions that can be conducted online. Initial uses of the gazetteer include the following:
- Collecting Stamp Duty on land transactions, and other taxes
- The National Land Information Service (NLIS), which provides information to conveyancing professionals
The structure of the database is defined by the BS 7666 standard (see British Standards). This includes the concept of a 12-digit Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN) for every building and plot of land in the country.
Formerly, postal addresses and postcodes were used to identify properties for official purposes, but the NLPG allows the identification of properties without postal addresses. Furthermore, whilst the older system stored only a single geographical point for each address, the NLPG database contains a polygon describing the boundary of each property.
