Selby High School is a co-educational, comprehensive high school in North Yorkshire, England. The main catchment area is from the town of Selby itself along with many other small villages from the Selby District including Thorpe Willoughby, Hambleton, Monk Fryston, Cawood and Wistow.

History

Selby Grammar School was founded in 1908 as an all girls school. In 1968 it became a coeducational grammar school and from 1979 a mixed comprehensive school. The name was changed to Selby High School to reflect the change in status. In June 2005 Selby High School was awarded Specialist School Status in the Performing and Visual Arts. From then the school has built a state of the art dance studio, a 200 seat theatre stand and and all weather pitch that is currently under construction(august 2007). The original plan was that the seating would become Selby cinema but the project folded due to lack of interest.

pecialist Status

In 2003 Selby High School began to raise money that would go towards securing specialist status. In 2005, the school was awarded specialist status in the Performing Arts after the targets required had been successfully met.In 2007 the School became the third most improved school in England.Selby High is regarded as the best school in selby district and North North Yorkshire.

Community

Charities

Selby High School is well known within the area for its charity work. After raising thousands of pounds over the past few years the school is recognised by many charities and has received several honours acknowledging this. Fact|date=February 2007

Future plans

The renovation of several rooms with better equipment is also a key point in the school's development.

House cup

In 2005 the school introduced a new house system with children from all year groups equally distributed into forms. The houses were to be named after famous people from the Yorkshire area. The houses are Garrett, Hockney, Mason, Palin. The house system has worked perfectly and up to date the winners of the house cups are:

* Mason (2008)
