Automatic Storage Management is a feature provided in Oracle 10g (since rev1) that aims to simplify the database files management. To do so, ASM provides file system and volume management capabilities directly inside the Oracle database kernel, allowing volumes and disks management with familiar SQL statements in Oracle. Therefore, the DBA doesn't need extra skills on specific file systems or volume managers usually provided by the operating system.
With ASM:
* IOs can take advantage of data striping
* Automatic online redistribution when you add or remove some storage
* Maintains redundant copies and provides 3rd party RAID functionalities
* Support 3rd party multipathing IO technologies (failover or load balancing to SAN access, etc.)
* Eliminates the needs for hot spares

Architecture Overview:ASM creates extents out of data, log, system, control files and other database structures. These extents are spread across all disks in the diskgroup. A diskgroup in ASM can be thought of as a volume manager and an asm disk can be thought of as logical volume. In addition to the existing background processess, ASM introduces two new background processes - ORMB and RBAL. RBAL is responsible for the opening and creation of disks in a diskgroup. ORMB provides the functionality of moving data between disks in a diskgroup.
Functionality:ASM requires an Oracle database instance to manage diskgroups. SQL*Plus can be used to connect to ASM and do the usual operations like startup and shutdown. However, ORACLE_SID needs to be set to '+ASM' and not the ORACLE_SID of the database. Views like V$ASM_DISK, V$ASM_DISKGROUP, V$ASM_FILE, V$ASM_ALIAS can be used to query for information regarding a diskgroup, disks in the diskgroup, their layout, extents etc.
