* 1899 – The New York Central railroad leases the Boston and Albany Railroad.

* 1919 – The "golden spike" is driven and construction of the San Diego and Arizona Railway is completed at a cost of $18 million.
* 1982 – The Joetsu Shinkansen opens for service between Tokyo and Niigata.
21st century
* 2001 – Two Canadian National Railway trains collide head-on in Andersonville, Michigan (northwest of Detroit).
* 2004 – QR Tilt Train "Spirit of Townsville" derails near Berajondo, Queensland, Australia, due to excessive speed at a curved section of track. None of the 157 people on board died. See Cairns Tilt Train derailment.
