"Mad" Mel Angelstad (born October 31, 1971 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) is a former professional ice hockey player. He played two games in the NHL, both coming in the 2003–04 NHL Season with the Washington Capitals during which he became the first player to wear #69 in a regular season game.[1] Throughout his career he was known as a feared enforcer, earning his nickname The Mangler. The nickname, however did not come from Mel's fighting, it came from his locker tag, M.Angelstad.[citation needed]

For Angelstad, the road to the NHL was a long one.[2] He played five Colonial Hockey League seasons in Thunder Bay before becoming an IHL regular and then AHL regular.

While in Thunder Bay he played for both the Thunder Bay Senators and the Thunder Cats, wearing number 27, and spawning several bootlegged video collections of his fights. It was a rare night when Mad Mel wasn't the last man standing, but his ice presence was also dangerous for his forward passes and set-up skills. While he could never be accused of being a sniper, he was versatile enough the not be a liability on the ice like most goons.

During the 2003–04 NHL season Angelstad appeared in two games with the Washington Capitals, registering a total of zero points and two penalty minutes.[3]

Midway into the 2007 AIHL season, Angelstad signed with the Adelaide Avalanche. Previously Angelstad has played for the Manitoba Moose the Portland Pirates and the Motor City Mechanics.[1]
