Bangalore Medical College, now renamed Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, popularly known as BMC, is a medical college run by the Government of Karnataka. It is located on K.R. Road, near to City Market. It is the only government medical college in Bangalore and one of the 10 in Karnataka. BMC is an autonomous institution under the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Jayanagar, Bangalore.

History

It was established in 1955 by Dr. Shivram and Dr. Mekhri in what was then the fort police station ground. The college was initially run by the Mysore Medical Education Society and was later handed over to the Government of Karnataka. From its inception, the college has been associated with some of the most eminent doctors in India. It has become the most coveted destination for medical aspirants in Karnataka to study medicine and has been consistently ranked among the top ten medical colleges in India. It was ranked number 8 in 2006.

It celebrated its golden jubilee in 2005-2006 with major renovation and the inauguration of a state of the art digital library and conference hall. In 2006, the college was granted the prestigious "Autonomous" status by the Government of Karnataka. Attached Hospitals

*The teaching hospitals attached to the institution are the general hospitals Victoria Hospital (Bangalore Medical College), Bowring & Lady Curzon Hospitals, Vanivilas Women and childrens hospital, Minto eye hospital, SDS Tuberculosis Sanatorium. Apart from this, it is involved in community health facilities like Nelamangala Taluk Hospital, the Urban family welfare center on Siddaiah road and primary health centers in Pavgada, Sundekoppa, K. G. Halli and Hessarghatta. The teaching hospitals attached to Bangalore Medical College have more than 3000 beds. Apart from undergraduate courses, postgraduate courses are available in most specialities. A state-of-the-art burns department caters to all of Karnataka.

The college offers the four and a half year M.B.B.S. course with a one year compulsory rotating internship in affiliated hospitals. There are 150 seats of which 85% admissions are through CET at the state level and 15% through AIPMT at the national level. Admission is extremely competitive.

Hostels

The college does not not have hostels in its campus. The UG hostel is located in Palace Road while the PG hostel is located in Chamarajpet. However now the college has decided to build hostels within the campus as part of its major renovation plan.

College Fest

The college holds an intercollegiate fest "Cobolt skies" annually. This fest is only for medical colleges in Karnataka.

* Dr. Y. G. Parameshwara – Alumnus and former faculty in pharmacology was the first blind person to qualify as a doctor of medicine in India.

Present Status

Although BMC is still the top destination for medical aspirants in Karnataka to study medicine, shortage of teaching staff and government apathy towards its affiliated hospitals have hurt its reputation to some extent.
