Stage history
The play was first staged at the
Royal National Theatre in 1980, and subsequently became the focus of an unsuccessful legal challenge by campaignerMary Whitehouse against the play’s directorMichael Bogdanov . The complaint related to the on-stage depiction ofhomosexual rape . The directorSamuel West resurrected the play in 2006 at theCrucible Theatre ,Sheffield .See also
