Jeffrey E. Garten (born
October 29 ,1946 ) was the Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade under the Clinton administration and former Dean of theYale School of Management . Before this, Garten served on theWhite House Council on International Economic Policy under the Nixon administration and on the policy planning staffs of Secretaries of StateHenry Kissinger andCyrus Vance of the Ford and Carter administrations. He is the author of five books and currently holds the position ofJuan Trippe Professor in the Practice of International Trade, Finance, and Business at theYale School of Management , a position without tenure.Garten has worked on
Wall Street as a managing director ofLehman Brothers [ [http://mba.yale.edu/faculty/profiles/garten.shtml Yale.edu - Jeffrey Garten] ] and theBlackstone Group . At Lehman, he specialized indebt restructuring inLatin America . He also directed and expanded the Asianinvestment banking business for that firm. At Blackstone he worked in the financial advisory and mergers and acquisitions arena. From 1995 to 2005, Garten was dean of the Yale School of Management. During his tenure, the school retained its #19 rank in Businessweek's rankings.He sits on the board of directors for several corporations, including Aetna Corporation,
Alcan Inc.,CarMax , Inc., Credit Suisse Asset Management,The Conference Board , and The International Rescue Committee, and is chairman of Garten Rothkopf, an international advisory firm. He is also on the international advisory board ofToyota Motor Corporation , theLee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore, and theChicago Climate Exchange .From 1997 to 2005, Garten contributed a monthly column for
BusinessWeek . Currently, he is a frequent columnist forNewsweek International . He has also written widely inThe New York Times ,The Wall Street Journal ,The Financial Times , andForeign Affairs .He earned his B.A. from
Dartmouth College in 1968 and an M.A. in 1972 fromJohns Hopkins University . In 1980, he also received a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University'sSchool of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Garten also served in theUnited States Army from 1968 to 1972, and achieved a rank of Lieutenant,82nd Airborne Division , and Captain in theU.S. Special Forces . During his tenure, he carried the title of Advisor to theRoyal Thai Army .Garten is married to his longtime wife, Ina, who is better known as Food Network's
Barefoot Contessa as well as being the author of several best-selling cookbooks. He is often featured on his wife'scooking show , where he sometimes assists her with small tasks such as lighting the fireplace or manning a barbecue grill, but more often simply appears for dinner. The Gartens live inSouthport, Connecticut ; East Hampton, New York; and Paris, France.Bibliography
